BMI Information

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple math calculation that determines your weight-to-height ratio. Based on the information you enter, the calculator will then determine your BMI using the formula pounds * 704.5 / height in inches². It can also give you information about extent of the risk factors that may be associated with your calculated BMI.

The BMI classification and health risk information provided above are based on Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obese Adults published by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and National Institute of Health in 1998. Health risks mentioned here include type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.

Ideal body weight is associated with the lowest death rate in insured populations and is taken from the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables. Please note that the BMI does not distinguish between excess fat and muscle. It is possible for heavily muscled individuals to have a BMI in excess of 25 without increased health risks. If your BMI is below 19, you may be below the safety minimum.

  • 18.9 or Less: Underweight
Warning! Your BMI indicates you are underweight and at risk of malnutrition and other health problems. Speak to your physician about your BMI and what is needed to reach a healthy weight.

  • 19 to 24.9: Healthy
Congratulations! Your healthy weight may reduce the risk of chronic diseases associated with being overweight. Keep up the good work!

  • 25 to 29.9: Overweight
Your BMI indicates you could be at risk for weight-related health conditions including the following:

    • Diabetes (Type II)
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Acid Reflux (GERD)

Although your BMI indicates you may not be a candidate for the LAP-BAND®, we invite you to attend a free educational seminar or call our Patient Service Center at 1-800-324-2694 to discuss your personal situation with a LAP-BAND® Expert.

  • 30 to 34.9: Obese
Yes, you are a candidate for True Results LAP-BAND® surgery.

Your BMI indicates you could have an increased risk for weight-related health conditions including the following:

    • Diabetes (Type II)

Given your increased risk for weight-related health problems, many surgeons will perform the LAP-BAND® procedure for patients with BMI in this range, if there is evidence of obesity-related risk factors. While most health insurance policies will not cover the cost of the LAP-BAND® surgery for people with 30-34.9BMI, True Results offers affordable financing options with payments as low as $9 per day.
