BMI Calculator

What your BMI Tells You at a Glance

What is BMI and why do we use it? BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is an approximate, mathematical ratio of your body mass based on your weight and height. BMI is the most widely used measurement for obesity, and it can also indicate when your health might be at risk for weight-related conditions including Type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. A BMI of 30 or more is generally considered the threshold for obesity, while a BMI of 40 or more generally qualifies as morbid obesity.

Why it’s important

While there’s lots of variation between individuals, any level of obesity is bad for you. Obesity is one of the biggest health concerns of the 21st century. It causes more unnecessary death and disease in the Western world than any other factor. There’s also no other single problem that negatively impacts quality of life – or increases the need for healthcare services – as much as obesity does in today’s world. If your BMI is 30 or more, then you may be at greater risk of:

Diabetes Sleep apnea Depression
Hypertension Arthritis Select cancers
Heart disease Lower back pain Gallstones
Asthma Infertility Urinary incontinence
