Building on the Partnership by Dr. Paul O'Brien

The Lap Band is proving to be one of the most powerful treatments in medicine today. Obesity is the cause or contributor to many diseases.

Much research has now been performed by us and many others showing that reducing weight leads to a healthier, happier and longer life.

The Lap Band is very effective in generating that weight-loss. The weight-loss then generates more health benefits than any other treatment we have in medicine today. But the Lap Band does not work just by being there. It takes effort and commitment by both of us to achieve the best results. The key to the success with the Lap Band is this partnership between the two of us. There are three things for each of us to do.

As the healthcare providers, we have to be sure the band is placed correctly and safely. We must also provide an aftercare program that gives you optimal follow-up care permanently. And we must be sure that you know what your part of the partnership is. You, in turn, must also do your three things to support this successful partnership. You must follow the rules regarding eating. You must follow the rules regarding exercise and activity. And you must always come back to the aftercare program.

The Lap Band facilitates good eating. It reduces hunger, takes away the interest in food and gives a feeling of satiety. This allows you to eat correctly. But you remain in charge of whether that happens or not. You are the one who makes you follow the rules. As the weight-loss starts to occur, you are able to become more active and exercise more.

The combination of good eating and plenty of activity and exercise achieves the substantial weight-loss and all the benefits that go with that weight-loss. But you have to work with the band to get the best outcomes. You have to be sure you are eating by the rules. You have to be sure you are as active as possible. You have to play your part in the partnership.

I have put all these rules in “The Lap Band SOLUTION: A Partnership in Weight-Loss”. The title emphasizes the partnership. The contents give you all the information you should need to do your part. You should all have a copy. Please refer to it often.

Best wishes, Partner, for a successful journey.
