History of the LAP-BAND

In June, 1986, adjustable gastric banding weight loss surgery was first used to restrict the amount of food that could be consumed. Approximately four years later, gastric banding was used in Europe for the first time as a surgery to combat obesity. In December of that year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved clinical trials with the first patient surgery performed.

In September, 1993, laparoscopic techniques were used in adjustable gastric banding and approximately two years later, the FDA approved a LAP-BAND clinical trial in the United States. In 2001, the LAP-BAND System was approved by the FDA for use in the United States. In the years leading up to this date, gastric banding had caught on in Europe and Australia and gastric banding surgeries were being performed on a regular basis.

In November, 2005, it was recorded that over 200,000 LAP-BAND surgeries had been performed worldwide. Since then, that number has grown dramatically as awareness of the procedure continues to increase and the substantial benefits to health and quality of life are realized by the public.

Anatomy of the LAP-BAND

The LAP-BAND consists of a silicone ring which is placed around the very top of the stomach. The ring has an inner balloon which is connected by the tubing to join to the access port. The access port is placed deep under the skin on the left-hand side of the abdomen.

Typically, patients are able to feel this reservoir when they lie down and the physician is able to give a shot adding or subtracting fluid from the band. This action makes the ring tighter or less tight and is the method for adjusting the degree of satiety and restriction.

By adjusting the amount of fluid in the balloon, we can set the limits on your appetite and help you set limits on the volume of food intake.

The LAP-BAND Process

Excellent results have been achieved with the TrueCare Program by the True Results team of medical specialists.

It is most important for patients to see the LAP-BAND procedure not just as a weight loss surgery, but as a process of care supported by our aftercare team.

A partnership should be formed with your surgeon and the True Results team to achieve optimal weight loss success. For the LAP-BAND to be most successful, patients must be committed to following the rules regarding eating, exercising, and keeping in contact with our diagnostics staff.
