» The American Institute of Gastric Banding Appoints Jonathan Wecker As CEO and Announces Follow-on Investment By Sankaty Advisors American Institute of Gastric Banding Joins with Well-Known Obesity Researcher to Offer World Class After-CarePeter Gottlieb, CEO of the American Institute of Gastric Banding, announces the addition of Paul O'Brien, M.D., to the company's long list of experienced physician resources. Dr. O'Brien will serve as the National Medical Director for the company, coordinating the aftercare program to help ensure the success of True Results LAP-BAND patients. "Dr. O'Brien is extremely knowledgeable in the field of obesity research and will bring great insight to this position," said Gottlieb. "His expertise in this area will be very beneficial to True Results patients." Dr. O'Brien is the Director of the Centre for Obesity Research and Education (CORE), a major research center within Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He has conducted numerous studies on the morbidity of obesity and the health benefits of weight loss and recently served as lead investigator of the first randomized controlled trial to examine the relationship between weight-loss surgery and traditional, non-surgical therapy. More details on Dr. O'Brien's study can be found in the May issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. O'Brien's study measured the effects of the LAP-BAND procedure versus traditional non-surgical weight loss attempts in patients with a body mass index of 30 to 35. He and his colleagues discovered that surgical patients in the two-year study lost an average of 87 percent of their excess weight, while non-surgical patients actually gained weight. Surgical patients also reported a significant decrease in health problems such as diabetes and hypertension, and an improvement in their quality of life. The results of this study will help True Results continue to serve patients in all ranges of obesity from mild to severe. "Numerous observational studies have suggested that bariatric surgery is more effective than non-surgical therapy," said Dr. O'Brien. "As the first randomized controlled trial, this information will serve as a blueprint for further investigation into the serious and common problem of morbid obesity. I look forward to applying this knowledge to my position at True Results in an effort to help obese individuals reclaim their health and well-being." Headquartered in Richardson, Texas, the American Institute of Gastric Banding is the #1 LAP-BAND provider in the world. More than 5,000 surgeries have been performed at its facilities in Richardson, Fort Worth and Houston. For more information, call 1-800-324-2694 or visit http://www.TrueResults.com. |
