My Story I have struggled with my weight since I was in elementary school. I was in the weight watchers program at the age of 8. I was teased and picked on throughout my elementary and junior high days. My parents even pulled me out of public school and put me into a private school because kids would harass me so terribly. I was truly the ugly duckling and felt so inferior to others. My weight has always been a problem and I thought it was a lost cause. I have tried diet and exercise and everything in between. I heard about the Lap Band procedure from a girlfriend of mine that had it done. I began to look into the procedure and finally attended a seminar. It was hard for me to even walk into the seminar because it was forcing me to face the facts that I was overweight and on a path for serious health problems, etc. I decided to use Dr. Benavides because of his experience and his staff. I also found out that my insurance would not cover the lap band, so I had to debate on spending several thousands of dollars. It was very scary since there is no guarantee that it will work. What if I spend this money and it does not work for me? However, I made the decision that it was time that I think about myself and finally spend some money on my own health. I did not blink an eye to put in a swimming pool or buy a nice car. Why was it hard for me to spend money on myself? I chose the lap band because it was an outpatient procedure, less invasive, and adjustable. I am also glad that I chose to get it done while I am still young. I was in my late twenties when I had the procedure and it has changed my life. I cannot believe that I am the lowest weight I have been in over 10 years. I can walk into a store and buy clothes off of the rack and in regular sizes. I have more confidence than I have had in years. It still seems hard to believe it is “me” when I look into the mirror. I have had a great support system throughout this journey, which is not ever going to be over. I chose to tell my family and friends about my decision to have the Lap Band. This is a personal decision for everyone to make. However, I knew that I would have judgment from some and much more support from others. I even thought hard about sharing my story with everyone because there are many people who think that this is the “easy way out”. However, I am a success and I know that many others will be successful too. There are always going to be people who have not struggled with weight and make assumptions about weight loss procedures. It is OK. I heard “get in the gym and eat right” more times than I can mention. Stay strong and remember that this is for you. I am not at goal yet and I am not sure what my goal is. I know that if I do not lose another pound, this has all been worth it. The Lap Band has been a true gift for me. I would do it all over again. Remember, it is a marathon and not a sprint. Don’t compare yourself to others with regard to the amount of weight that you are losing. I have lost my weight slowly and do not have any hanging skin, etc. I never thought I would be able to lose the weight. I am thankful and I know that if I can do it, anyone can do it. |
